Which LED lighting kit do I need for my model?

Choosing the right lighting kit depends on four things: the size of the model, the space available for wires and batteries, the lighting effect you want, and how much installation work you are comfortable doing.

For most beginners, the easiest option is a ready-made lighting kit. These usually include the LEDs, battery box, connectors, and instructions needed for one project. A ready-made kit is a good choice if you want to avoid calculating resistors, soldering wires, or choosing separate components.

For very small models or areas like buttons or panels, nano chip LEDs or fibre optics are usually the best options. Nano LEDs provide direct light from a very small source, while fibre optics are useful when you want to carry light into tiny areas such as cockpit panels, windows, visors, buttons, or Sci-Fi surface details.

For buildings, dolls houses, and dioramas, warm white LEDs usually give the most natural interior lighting. A 3V AAA battery box is often a practical choice where there is room to hide it, while coin cell batteries are better for very compact builds with only a few LEDs.

For model railway layouts, the right choice depends on the scale and whether the lighting is for buildings, platforms, vehicles, street lamps, or yard lights. Warm white lighting often works best for houses and older buildings, while cool white may suit modern industrial or station scenes.

For wargaming and Sci-Fi models, the main challenge is usually space. LEDs may need to fit inside bases, weapons, engines, eyes, cockpits, or vehicle bodies. In these cases, pre-wired nano LEDs and small battery holders are often more useful than larger standard LEDs.

Quick recommendation table:

Model project Usually best option Why
1:48 dolls house Warm white nano LED kit Small, neat, natural-looking interior light
1:144 building Warm white nano LED kit Very small lighting points
Warhammer eyes or weapons Nano, 0805 or 3mm LEDs depending on the model size Fits into tiny spaces
Model railway building Warm white 3528 chip LEDs or LED strip Good room or building illumination
Sci-Fi cockpit Fibre optics and nano LEDs Ideal for buttons, panels, and windows
Vehicle headlights Chip LEDs, 1.8mm, 3mm, or 5mm LEDs Depends on model scale and lens size
Fire or welding effect Flickering LED lighting kit or welding effect kit Creates movement and realism
